Deogyusan Muju Resort in South Korea is a great place to go for the winter holiday. The resort covers an area of over 7 million square meters, located in the Deogyusan National Park and Gucheon-dong Valley. Deogyusan Muju Resort has a variety of 6 ski slopes to offer different levels of difficulty for the skier or snowboarder. Here are some tips I learned while skiing at the resort on my S.Korea Travels.
Deogyusan Muju Resort
Tip 1 Deogyusan Muju Resort
Ski passes are available for purchase at the Deogyusan Muju ticket office. A combination of equipment and slope passes are also available. If you start out snowboarding and want to switch to skiing there was no problem changing out the gear. We didn’t have to pay any extra fees but check their policy before purchasing.
As in the case of my husband, whose YouTube video snowboarding lesson didn’t actually work, he was able to change back to skis with no difficulty.
Tip 2 Deogyusan Muju Resort
Arrive early at the resort to get the best sizes available for equipment rentals. They do offer larger size ski boots but only offer short skis.
Tip 3 Deogyusan Muju Resort
If clothing is needed, stop by one of the many ski shops on the way to the Deogyusan Muju Resort and rent the gear you need. Check to see if they carry longer skis if needed. Western sizes are available.
Tip 4 Deogyusan Muju Resort
Before my trip I like to stop at Home plus to pick up a ski hat, gloves, scarf and goggles for my glasses. Oh, and let’s not forget the hand warmers that saved me one beautiful Christmas day while skiing while it was snowing and cold. I also had heat warms scrunched in my boots to keep my toes warm. That was a cold winter.
Tip 5 Hotels Deogyusan Muju Resort
Hotel Tirol Deogyusan “Muju” Resort
I enjoy a stay at the Hotel Tirol where you can end your day skiing to the hotel. Rooms have western style beds and a great restaurant which serves a wonderful Christmas Day dinner. A few restaurants and a small market are close by. I do suggest to bring your own snacks and hot chocolate due the few stores available.
A good tip: The chair lift seats sit very low. If you’re tall be prepared to get up from a squat position. What a time we had laughing at ourselves trying to get off the lift. That’s a video all in itself. Talk about a rear end work out.
Other Hotels to choose besides the Hotel Tirol are the Family Hotel and Kookmine Mine Hotel which are all accessible through the Deogyusan Resort link. Here is another link to the Hotel Tirol and the Deogyusan Muju Resort
Tip 6 More Suggestions Deogyusan Muju Resort
Here are some website links this 1Adventure Traveler found helpful planning my trip to the Deogyusan “Muju” Resort area. and Deogyusan Muju Resort Slope Map. The map was great to print up and put in my pocket.
Please leave your comments and recommend your favorite resort or ski run. If the weather is permitting take a ride without your skis up to the top of the mountain on the gondola. I have heard it is an amazing view. I missed that experience due to heavy snowing and it was closed. As we used to say when I was growing up and skiing “don’t eat yellow snow”.
Life is short, go out and have an adventure! Only leave footprints!

While I’m not a skier, this resort does look fantastic. I had heard Japan has some good skiing and it certainly seems the case. Love that they’ve gone for an alpine chalet style for the Hotel Tirol, nice blending of cultures. Nice one Steph!
Thanks David,
The Hotel Tirol in South Korea has a different look to the area but after being in Austria was wonderful sight to see. Inside with all the beautiful wood and decorations especially for the Holidays was beautiful. Skiing was fantastic.

Great tips I’ve always wanted to go on a ski trip- one that’s still on my list for sure! what country exactly is the resort in?
Thanks Lauren,
Deogyusan Muju Resort is in South Korea. A wonderful ski area not to big but the Hotel Tirol I feel is what made it. Plus it was located only a few hours of where I lived.

The Deogyusan Muju Resort sounds cool. I didn’t realise it was in Korea until I started reading about Western sizes! Please excuse my ignorance! Me and Phil must get our act together and learn to ski properly, as we’re just novices and don’t book skiing holidays. Thanks for sharing Stephanie
Thanks Garth,
I didn’t realize the country was not in the blog until after reading this which I corrected so people knew where this was. Thank you 🙂 I do not ski much anymore but I was up for an adventure after some teasing from my husband who in the end kept telling me to slow down I might hurt myself. Laughing as I skied by and waited at the bottom of the hill. The adventurer in me 🙂 If every in South Korea in the winter its always fun to watch to people watch 🙂

This looks like a lot of fun and a quaint town. The hotel looks quite unique. Located in a National Park I bet the views at the top are amazing, hopefully next visit for you. Will pin this for a future visit!
Thanks Lisa,
Just being up in the mountains with the snow following is amazing, then to ski it doesn’t get any better 🙂 The hotel was quaint but not to much in the town maybe next trip.

Really informative post if you are looking for accommodation in this area. Usefull post. #feetdotravel
Thanks Paul and Carole,
This hotel was amazing and copied after the Tirol Chalet in Austria. Not one of the more popular destinations but a great share because Seoul could be an extended stay flying from one city to another. Especially on those 12-24 hour flights. Then its winter and skiing comes to mind 🙂

South Korea seems to have everything! Awesome hiking, big cities, amazing food and now skiing! Definitely need to check it out and maybe even rekindle my love for skiing! Thanks for sharing – I love the look of that hotel!
Thanks Alexei,
Skiing in Korea is lots of fun and is bitter cold. Go right through you. The Hotel Tirol is very nice and only open in the winter. Booking is a few months ahead. Hope you get a chance to try out skiing there.

These are great tips – shame I didn’t this earlier when a friend asked me for ski-ing tips and I’m not a ski-er so couldn’t help 🙁 I love the snow though and actually spent Xmas one year on a ski slope in Austria, it was part of a tour and I loved waking up to the snow on Xmas morning – it was the holiday that made me truly fall in love with snow which (as you know) we ended up marrying in so I will always be grateful to that holiday and that first Christmas in the powder white blanket. Thanks for sharing, I will pin this for the future in case anyone else asks for tips!
Thanks Angie,
I like you have a love for snow on Christmas and it was fun to be able to ski in South Korea. There are actually a few popular ski slopes there. I have yet to ski Austria but it is high up on my bucket-list as is the Ice Castle you were married at. You both look amazing & reminded me of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Awesome 🙂

I was not skiing for more than 2 years and this post opened my appetite! Nice tips and beautiful photos!
Thanks Simona,
It had been years since I skied too. After watching my husband have a great time I gave up my fear of breaking bones due to older age lol and got on the slopes. Toward the end of the day my husband was telling me to slow down. Sometimes it is just fun to watch all the people and drink hot cocoa.

Although I gave up skiing many years ago, this looks like a great area to hit the slopes! I love your tip on the low seats on the chairlift. That’s honestly something that wouldn’t cross my mind!
Thanks Jenn,
It is a great to hit the slopes or if your not a skier, go up the Gondola to the top of the mountain for a wonderful view. The chairlift for the first time was so hard to get out of. My husband and I didn’t realize they were so low and plopped down in them and we were freaking out wondering how to ski out at the end. After laughing, falling, and crashing we finally got it together and did better on our squats. See when the seats are low and you ski off you have to squat so it doesn’t hit you in the head on the way around lol…
