Frozen Niagara Falls Expo
Travel & Leisure
Excitement set in when I heard the Frozen Niagara Falls was the place to visit this winter. Next thing I knew Mr. 1AdventureTraveler said, “I need to go to Toronto for work, let us stop by Niagara Falls to check out this phenomenon”.
My bag was packed in minutes since I always have a “go to bag” ready. The flights were booked and off we went. Toronto here we come. Reality set in when we arrived and the cold air hit me as we looked for the rental car. A question came to mind…Did I pack enough winter clothes to keep me warm?
Weather – Frozen Niagara Falls
With the Artic Weather -25 C what was it going to be like at the falls I thought. Facts say it has not been this cold in Toronto since 1859. Niagara Falls was now having temperatures ranging from -14 – 22 C outside according to the Weather Channel. Also mentioned Frostbite can occur after just 30 min outside which I found out later. This was exciting and I was ready to start my adventure.
With these cold temperatures at the falls excitement set in to see the build-up of ice which gives the illusion that Niagara Falls has stopped moving. Then see the free Night Illumination, which I saw from my “room with a view” at the Sheraton Hotel was fantastic.
This cold weather and frozen falls will not last for long. My fingers were freezing as I snapped photos and trying to take a selfie with the frozen Niagara Falls in the background, but oh, no I could not press the photo button. Laughing, I kept trying as my tears running down my face were freezing. By that time Mr. 1AdventureTraveler was in the Visitor’s Center drinking hot chocolate.

Looks absolutely spectacular!
Thanks Kelly, The views and taking the photos made up for the very cold temperatures. It was fun to capture with the camera.
Our friends also went to Niagara when it was frozen. Amazing! We are thinking of going in the summer, but the shots won’t be like this!
Hi Kate and Kris, If you visit this summer your photos and views will not be like this but still spectacular. It is so amazing to see so much water rushing over the falls.
Loving your Niagara Falls posts! I know what it feels like to have freezing fingers trying to take photos from our visits to Lappland and Iceland. .. but it sure is worth it! #feetdotravel
Thanks Angie, It was so cold but fun to try and take the photos. I would love to take a visit to Lappland and Iceland.
Looks incredible, Steph! Whether I want to visit during the height of winter and experience those temperatures, I am not so sure! Would be such a special thing to witness though! Thanks for sharing
Thanks Alexei, I do not blame you not wanting to visit in winter. It was so cold there at that time. At least I was able to photograph which was my goal and so amazing 😉
This gives a good reason to travel to Niagara Falls in the winter. This is awesome and not the usual “view” you think of with this amazing world wonder.
Thanks Sharon, Niagara Falls in winter I must admit was an unusual “view” but so worth braving the cold. Must catch the view at the right time because now a lot of the snow and ice has melted.
I lived in Toronto and only visited the falls in summer but wow I would love to see them in winter too! I thought they were beautiful! Time to consider a trip back there I think !
Hi Tracy, a trip to the falls during or after an ice/snow storm is just amazing and worth a visit. A must is very warm clothes and a waterproof jacket. When close to the falls the rush of the water causes mist which falls on you and freezes.
Wow what an amazing but cold experience! Fantastic photos too. #feetdotravel
Thanks Paul and Carole, Niagara Falls was so amazing but yes very very cold.lol. Very hard to push buttons to take photos 😊
Omgosh I don’t know if I would be able to handle the cold and trying to take photos! I’m surprised the camera even worked in that kind of cold! Would be awesome to see the falls frozen over! #FeetDoTravel
The cold was very unbearable but I just had to take those photos. I am surprised too that camera worked just not my fingers to push the button. lol. Falls in winter is a must sight to see.
