Great place for fall in South Korea is Mt Maisan. Thinking this as I drive there with a car full of ladies on an adventure. Not sure where the exit is or what to expect, but we were all ready for the adventure after reading a short write up in a Lonely Planet Travel Book. Finding the South Park Entrance we stop, jump out of the car, stand in awe, at this beautiful tall tree with this amazing color of yellow like the sun. That’s when we realize how cold it is and we are all under-dressed.
Parked next to large buses watching with excitement, as colorful groups of Koreans rushing to make their way to the entrance all dressed in hiking clothes. Our first goal was to find gloves and something warm to cover our ears.
As we walked down the road with steaming food stalls, vendors, restaurants, souvenir shops along the side all begging us to stop we venture on.
The impact of fall on the trees grows more intense in color from warm yellows to fire reds has us excited for this new season. Now it feels like fall is here. With our gloves and ear warmers on we follow the colorful masses of people and hike the main road.
Passing a lake, water canal, then coming to a large stone tiger we turn the corner we stop, and standing before us is these amazing 80 Stones Pagoda that rises up to 10 meters tall built into the side of the mountain. Our mouths drop open as we pull out our cameras and try to catch this amazing site.
Large stone paths lead the way straight ahead to the Pagoda. Do a quick turn of the head to the left up under the cliff were offerings and prayer rocks then turn of the head to the right we see stairs that lead to more hiking adventure.
Pathway to the right of the Pagoda that leads to more adventures.
History of the Stone Pagoda
The story people say about theses 80 Stone Pagodas is that around 100 yrs ago a monk who lived in seclusion erected these pagodas as a prayer for peace. Unaffected today by strong wind and elements creates an interesting monument to Buddhism.
On the south side of Mt Maisan only 80 Pagodas exist today. Another interesting fact are the icicles that form in winter. Put water in a bowl and as it freezes the water forms a pole that reaches the sky.

We missed fall this time as we went back to South Africa (spring) quite early to avoid the winter time. Next year we hope to be in North America in October. Stunning pictures!
Thanks Marcelle,
Fall is such a beautiful time of year and I was fortunate enough to spend it in South Korea hiking the mountain peaks. I have never been to South Africa and will have to look for your blogs on your time there. Glad you liked the photos.

I had a great time visiting South Korea even though it was winter and freezing cold. This park looks great and I will have to check it out on my next visit. Have pinned it to my pinterest board for later.
Thanks Barry,

I love Autumn (Fall), and I love reading people’s stories and thoughts as they explore the beautiful trees changing colour – fabulous! Thank you for sharing this with us and for your gorgeous photos and thank you also for the history of the pagodas, loved it 🙂
Thanks Angie,
Fall is one of my favorite times of the years to hike and explore and was thankful to see the beautiful leaves change colors here at Mt Maisan. The Pagoda story is fascinating and its still standing as strong as every and how one person set each stone. Happy you were able to enjoy the photos.

Love your posts about South Korea Stephanie! really makes me want to visit the country more and more now, as I’ve never really considered it before
Thanks Garth,
South Korea has it’s own beauty and culture. Its also a great stop over place on your way to China, Thailand, etc. Mt. Maisan is one of the many hidden gems in a country with lots of mountains. So much hiking/walking can be done along with learning about the history & culture.

Wow, what a fascinating landscape and particularly colourful in autumn. Can’t believe they have 80 pagodas in just one place. I hadn’t really considered South Korea as somewhere with spots like this, but I’m definitely intrigued now. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks David,
Yes, 80 pagodas and the story is fascinating with one person laying each stone and its still standing. There are 4 seasons in Korea and it has not done harm to it yet. S.Korea has lots of mountains with wonderful places to hike with hidden treasures to see.

Thanks Kelly,
Mt Maisan is one of my favorite peaks to visit in South Korea. One I highly recommend if your in the area. The seasonal changes make this place one to visit often even if it was 2 hrs from my home at the time. My favorite was fall and glad you enjoyed article.
