Visit one of the most popular attractions with these Niagara Falls Facts that you have not seen on BuzzFeed.  From daredevils that want to conquer the falls, to how much water goes over the falls, let us find out.  Gallons of water flows over these falls that interestingly call these crazy adventurers.

In my quest for facts there were a few different answers for some of the questions with feet/meters.  The answers were close, so know that the answers given are approximate.  These were acquired with the help from some of the Niagara Falls Activities Article and the History Channel.  Like you, I might need this Dummies Guide.

1. How much water flows over Niagara Falls?

More than 6 million cubic feet of water flows over the falls every minute.

2. How old is Niagara Falls?

Created 25,000 years ago, estimated by geologists.  They think happened during the age of the Wisconsin Glacier.

3. How old is the first person to plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel?

63 Yrs. old.  School teacher named Annie Edson Taylor

4. How hard does the water hit going over Niagara Falls?

It is like one pail of water impacts with a weight of about 27.2 Kilograms or 60 pounds.

5. How deep is Niagara Falls?

River below averages 170 feet deep.

6. How high is Niagara Falls?

51 meters or 167 feet high.

7. Is Niagara Falls the highest waterfall in the world?

No, Angel Falls in Venezuela is the highest waterfall at 975 meters or 3,212 feet.

8. Will Niagara Falls be here forever?

Probably not.  Possibly in 1,000 years erosion could push the falls all the way back to Lake Erie.

9. Where is Niagara Falls located?

Border between Canada and the United States.

10. Can Niagara Falls Freeze?

Part of the falls can be covered over with ice in winter but continues to flow behind the ice buildup.

Tidbits – Niagara Falls Facts

  • 1848 –  Niagara Falls goes dry due to strong westerly winds.  Winds were keeping water in Lake Erie.
  • 1848 –  First service bridge goes across the Niagara gorge is finished.
  • 1885 – Niagara State Park Reservation opens. First state park that is established in the US.
  • Jean Francois Gravelet “The Great Blondin” –  1859 Tightrope walks over Niagara gorge across the rapids.
  • Jean Lussier1928, 3rd person over the falls inside a 6 foot rubber ball & survived 1928.
  • George Stathakis1930, plunged over the waterfalls with his pet turtle. He died but the turtle survived.
  • Red Hill Jr. – 1951 attempted going over the falls on a raft made of 13 inner tubes tied together.
  • Debernardi & Petkovich1989 first team to go over the falls together face to face in one barrel and survived.
  • Robert Overacker1995 attempted going over the falls on a jet ski.
  • Trotter & Martin1995 First man and woman to go over the falls in one barrel where they survived.

Enjoy these tidbits of information for fun!  There are a few people left off the list but these are the most interesting.
