The Secret of Positano Along the
Amalfi Coast
Find the secret of this amazing cliff-side village
Visit the village of Positano along the Central Amalfi Coast of Italy for some amazing picturesque photographs. ย Positano is a great day trip from Sorrento that leaves the adventurer able to visit other towns and do amazing activities along the Amalfi Coast. ย See what there is to do while inย Positanoย with these fantastic views. ย Positano is tucked into an enclave that leads down to the ocean.ย Letโs get a brief glance at the historyย and find out the secret of this sea cliff village.
ย
Sea Cliff Village of Positano
Brief History Positano
Positano was a port during the medieval times which was prosperous during the 16th and 17th century.ย By mid-19th century Positano had fallen on hard times where more than half of the people immigrated to the United States.ย This poor fishing village started to attract more tourists with features in films, books, and music for example โUnder the Tuscan Sunโ.ย Now for some suggested activities to do in Positano.
Activities in Positano
The cliff side stores and homes make ย a wonderful backdrop with their uneveness.ย Standing on the main road at the top of the village looking down the cobblestone streets seeing the local people, takes one back to another time.
Now take the adventure, walk down the thousand of cobblestone steps to the pebbly sand and put your feet in the Mediterranean Sea. ย Yes, you have arrived.ย Take your time, eat at the local restaurant, see the painter on the beach and buy one of his amazing paintings and browse the stores as you make your back way up the thousands of steps.
At the top where the road is visit the local ceramic pottery stores and buy some of the beautiful painted pottery.ย They will box for you to take or ship.ย Now cross the busy Main Street and get back on the bus to Sorrento.
Transportation to Positano
From Rome took the Express Train to Naples. On the local level of the Naples train station, follow the signs to the Circunvesuviana.ย The Cirsunvesuviana Train is a great way to travel to Sorrento.ย As everywhere always watch your luggage plus personal items for pick pockets.
Sorrento was my home base which also gave me daytrips to Pompeii, Herculaneum & the Island of Capri. ย I used the Cirsunversuviana to do my day trips to those locations.
For my daytrip to Positano taking a bus was easy.ย The road between Sorrento to Positano becomes very busy and I was thankful for the Bus Ride.ย The road is cliff side so while you look out the window at the twinkling sunlit ocean, ย your eyes go wide as you realize you are looking over the cliff.ย Itโs amazing how the cars and buses maneuver around each other, driverโs gesture, everyone is stuck and now youโre engrossed in the culture.
Positano Tips
- Positano is a great day-trip from Sorrento
- Take a Bus or Boat if itโs the right time of year, is the best way to go
- Walk the long winding cobblestone stairs down to the beach and put your feet in the Mediterranean Sea.

We missed painters on the beach, our visit was in such cloudy weather. Oh how I wished we would have seen them though. Our secret to Positano is to actually stay in neighboring Priano. It’s a little cheaper and honestly has better views that’s to it’s location further out of the nook Positano sits in.
Hi Brandy,
Sorry you missed the painter on the beach. He had some fantastic paintings. I have never been to Priano but will have to on my next trip sounds, amazing. I usually stay in Sorrennto but it is a drive for a day visit but do able. Thanks for the tip!
Happy Travels.
Your photos look so colorful and beautiful! Itยดs hard to believe Iยดve been to Italy 7 times, and still havenยดt seen Positano… Pinned for the future!
Thanks Anna,
Positano along the Amalfi Coast is beautiful and if you catch it on a sunny day will give you beautiful photos. The walk down to the ocean past shops and restaurants is amazing. The walk up not so much. lol. Hope you get a chance to visit.

Oh Stephanie! I really, really, really want to go to Positano! Ever since I saw Under The Tuscan Sun… I will be close next spring and had been to Sorrento some time ago. I guess I didn’t realize the proximity until I saw it here! I must get this back on my list of places to go – your photos are beautiful!!
Thanks Jenn,
Great you have been to Sorrento which is a good home base. Yes, Positano is only a day trip from Sorrento. Until researching I didn’t know Under the Tuscan Sun… was filmed there. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful and provides such wonderful photos which I love to take. I just need to edit more photos so I can post more blogs on the Amalfi Coast.

Oh Positano, it always looks so unbelievably pretty. I’d love to visit that part of Italy one day, very jealous Stephanie. There’s so much packed into that region, Pompeii, Naples, Herculaneam. When I do eventually go, I’ll look back at this to use your tips for getting around.
Thanks David,
Your right there is so much to do along the Amalfi Coast and Positano makes a great day trip from Sorrento. Other day trips offered Pompeii, Herculean, & Blue grotto all take a day each to visit and we had to budget our time. All wonderful and worth seeing. Hope you get to see the Amalfi Coast someday…
Happy Travels – Stephanie:-)
Great blog, very informative and inspirational!
Thanks Lauren,
The Amalfi Coast is a wonderful place to visit and Positano is a great cliff side town. Italy is so rich in history and travels there are enjoyable.

You are right the glistening water provides a wonderful backdrop for photos! Looks like a stunning spot to set up camp for a couple of weeks, I used to travel with only my smartphone, but when you see stunning places like this, it makes me glad I bought a half decent camera.
Thanks Barry,
The Amalfi Coast is just amazing and Positano is one of so many places to take awesome photos. Sorrento is a great place to make camp and take day trips from there. I still take photos with my smartphone since the photos are jpeg and can be uploaded quickly. My decent camera takes photos in raw which means I have to edit, save and convert to jpeg. All for the love of the perfect photo…

I’ve been to sorrento before, and while we made it to Capri, we couldn’t quite fit positano into our trip! But looking at your photos is reminding me why I need to go back!
Becki,
Glad you have been to Sorrento. I enjoyed my stay there and did my day trips from there to Pompeii, Herculean, and more. The Cirsunversuviana during the day is great but at night coming from Naples puts one on guard to keep your belongings safe. Hope you were able to do the Blue Grotto which I found to be so fascinating. I wanted to jump out of the boat and swim. Amazing.
Happy Travels – Stephanie ๐
Way too beautiful. I’m amazed.

I love cobbled streets and beautiful views, and I was right there with you on the beach, enjoying a spot of bunch and watching the painter, fabulous! I love my photography, and this picturesque village would please me greatly! I have pinned this for future reference, thanks for providing all the information!
Thanks Angie,
I love my photography too and Positano was fun. Just wish it wasn’t so hazy but I hoped to catch some of the beauty of this cliff side town. Yes the painter was there when my friends went there the year before and we had to buy one of his paintings when we went. During the summer there are boats that can take you to Positano from Sorrento which would be fun. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful with lots of things to see.
Happy Travels – Stephanie ๐
The Amalfi coast and the Italian Riviera are two areas we’ve still not explored in Italy. Positano looks incredibly picturesque, sounds like you had a nice time exploring the cliffside town. I must take my sketchbook when we eventually go!
Thanks Garth,
Positano was a wonderful day trip and worth taking your sketchbook. The Amalfi Coast has Pompeii, Herculean, Sorrento and more all day trips from Sorrento. Like you I have not been to the Italian Riviera and will put that on my bucket list. I love traveling around Italy!
Happy Travels – Stephanie ๐
Nice article, thank you for sharing this with us. I might have to reconsider my bucket list and add this to it. Happy travels!
